The City of Maastricht
Maastricht is often referred to as the Gateway to Europe since the signing of the Maastricht Treaty which makes this city especially suitable for an international School as the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance. Maastricht is a charming town which has preserved its unique character over the centuries. It has been shaped through the ages by arts and culture. Getting around
By bike The best way to get around in Maastricht is by bicycle. In the student guide that you get on your arrival you can find some addresses where you can buy second hand bikes. Do not forget to buy a good lock as well! Don't park your bike just anywhere in town. Due to new regulations you can only park in designated areas.
By bus All city and regional buses have a stop at the central train station in Maastricht. Many buses also cross the Market Square. At each bus stop you can find an overview of the bus routes and the bus numbers. All buses drive according to a schedule that you can find at the bus stop of that particular bus. You can pay for the bus the driver but if you buy a so-called 'strippenkaart' at the train station you pay 40% less. A 'strippenkaart' with 15 'strippen' (strips) costs 6.50 euros.
By taxi In Maastricht you can get a taxi by calling a taxi company or by going to a taxi stand. In the center of Maastricht are several taxi stands. All taxis are clearly marked: they have blue license plates and a 'Taxi' sign. They all have a meter. In general, they are considerably more expensive than public transport.
By car The centre of Maastricht has a number of clearly marked parking places. There are a lot of one-way streets and pedestrian zones and the city can be very busy at times. The best thing to do is to park your car just inside or outside the centre and do the rest by foot. In the rest of Maastricht parking is easier and mostly for free.
