Visa and residence permit
Visa
Students who attend the School for short courses and stay for a maximum of three months can apply for a tourist visa at the Dutch embassy in their home country.
Students who stay longer than three months need a visa (called 'MVV' (authorisation for temporary stay)) before they can apply for a residence permit in the Netherlands. The need for a visa depends on your nationality. Persons with the following nationalities do not need an MVV to apply for a residence permit:
Australia, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, the Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, United States of America, Iceland, Vatican City, Sweden, Switzerland.
Assistance of Maastricht Graduate School of Governance with visa application We strongly recommend that you do not arrange your own visa. When we arrange your visa for you, the process takes 2 to 4 weeks. If you arrange a visa yourself by filling in an application at the Dutch Embassy in your home country, this procedure can take up to 4 to 6 months and is much more expensive.
Process We apply for your visa with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND). When the IND approves the application, we will inform you and you can then contact the Dutch Embassy in your country to collect the MVV. The MVV is a sticker. The Embassy will check your passport and then attach the MVV to the passport. You have six months to collect the MVV. Once the MVV has been attached to your passport, you have six months to travel to the Netherlands.
Costs The MVV costs 250 euros and has to be paid for by
the student.
After you arrive in the Netherlands you need to apply for a residence permit. Please note that the fee for the residence permit is 188 euros and has to be paid when you apply for it in Maastricht. You will get more details about the application for a residence permit after you arrive in Maastricht. Make sure that you bring a copy of your birth certificate with you when you come to the Netherlands; you need it when you apply for your residence permit. Please check with the Dutch Embassy whether you have to have your birth certificate legalized or certified by the Embassy.
Documents required for the visa application In order to submit your visa application, we need the following documents:
1. copy of your valid passport
2. proof of health insurance
3. admission letter or admission statement
4. proof of sufficient funds
5. Chinese students only: a language assessment from NESO Beijing (www.nesobeijing.com)
In your file, we already have a copy of your passport and your admission letter. We also take care of the insurance.
From you, we need proof that you can support yourself financially. The IND requires that you have at least 750 euros per month at your disposal. This sum can come from any or all of the following sources:
a. your employer: for this, we need a letter from your employer stating the following:
• name and address details of the company
• that you are an employee
• the monthly amount that you will receive (at least 750 euros) • the period
|
b. a student grant: send us a document from the body that gives you your grant which states the amount and period of the grant
|
c. your own money: send us a bank statement with the following information:
• your name and address
• your account number
• amount of money in the account (for one year, this should be at least 9,000 euros)
This needs to be an original statement, no older than three months, signed and stamped by a bank official. The IND does not accept copies!
|
d. money from a sponsor: for this we need a financial statement which says that your sponsor (e.g. parent) has enough money to support you. You can download a standard financial statement from our website www.governance.unimaas.nl (click on your program and then on 'Application and tuition'). In addition, the following documents are required of the sponsor:
• a copy of the passport/identity card
• bank statement, no older than three months, indicating the name, address, bank account number and amount of money of the sponsor
