Mission

Our mission is to train specialists who combine a high level of academic scholarship with leadership, in order to strengthen democratic governance in domestic and international organizations.

In light of the growing needs for specialists in public policy analysis, the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance was founded in September 2004 by the University Board of Maastricht University. In the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance, the academic resources of the faculties of Maastricht University and those of several foreign partners are combined in order to guarantee multi-disciplinary top-academic training in the heart of Europe.

The decisions of public officials have important ramifications across both domestic and global political landscapes, often influencing individuals far beyond the physical borders of nation-states. The concept of "government” has evolved into a system of bureaucracies incorporating various layers of public agencies ranging from international organizations to local administration.

Nowadays, the domain of public policy analysis is considered to cater for the needs of an important knowledge-intensive sector of the economy, i.e., to provide the knowledge and skills needed to analyse policy options and their impact in for example sustainable technology, social protection financing or health care organisations.

Given the growing complexity of the issues at hand, we may conclude that there is a growing need for specialists in policy analysis and therefore a growing need for education programmes which provide scholars with a comprehensive combination of theoretical background, technical skills and specific area knowledge to put theory into reality.

The Maastricht Graduate School of Governance prepares professionals and researchers for policy analysis, risk assessment, policy design, policy monitoring, policy evaluation and methods and techniques of policy research.

Prof. dr. Chris de Neubourg
Academic Director

We believe that scientific exploration and explanation are adventurous endeavours requiring discipline and creativity. The objective is to enhance ingenuity in technical and in political matters. The School unites the excellence of Maastricht University faculties and the input of leading scholars from other universities and research institutes. Their joint efforts provide an academic forum to discuss, to discover and to learn in an open-minded atmosphere. Scholarly research is matched by socially embedded curiosity and by the desire to contribute to the analytical mapping of problems and solutions. Sophistication is required for its contribution to simplify the world in order to gain better understanding of its challenges. The School and its staff are dedicated to these tasks and want to share their enthusiasm with researchers and students. We warmly welcome all who want to contribute to our mission.
