Ball, 2008
Observant, December 4th
By Irene Smeets
The Charity Ball, organised by
the School of Governance, raised
12,300 euros for the Maastricht
University scholarship fund last
Saturday evening.
Seventy guests, including
researchers and guests from the
world of banking and the hotel
industry, enjoyed a four-course
dinner in the university
building on the Kapoenstraat.
Proceeds from the dinner
amounted to 6,300 euros. A
silent auction of credit notes,
gifts and special offers from
shops, hotels and restaurants in
Maastricht, yielded six thousand
euros.
"This won't get us very far,
because a single scholarship
actually costs 11.500 euros, but
we hope that this event has
raised awareness of the fund.
Ultimately, we would like
companies to donate scholarships
linked to their names", says
Charlotte Groven, communication
officer for the School of
Governance. The fund is used to
enable talented students, in
particular from developing
countries, to study at the UM.

Last year's Charity Ball
On Saturday December 1st, the
School hosted its first Charity
Ball. With about 70 guests, this
pioneering event was well
attended and generate around €
10.000 for the MGSoG/UM
scholarship fund. The guests
enjoyed a wonderful evening,
including a delicious
four-course dinner served by
Restaurant le Courage, live
music from two bands, a special
dance performance by Marcus van
Teijlingen (known from the
popular TV programme “Dancing
with the Stars”), and a “silent
auction”. Being the first of its
kind organized by Maastricht
University, the silent auction
was well received and guests
enthusiastically engaged in
bidding races. The auction
boasted a range of attractive
items that had been donated by
shops, restaurants, museums and
other generous businesses from
the Maastricht region. The
special guest of the evening was
Curtis Roosevelt, grandson of
the famous American president FD.
Roosevelt who has a special bond
to the School, having already
been a guest speaker at the
official opening of the School
in 2005.The evening was a great
success and for everyone who
asked for a repetition of the
evening, we can assure that
there will definitely be another
Charity Ball next year (29
November 2008)! We would
like to thank all donors
mentioned below for their
support.
Frits Barend initiates the
Maastricht Graduate School of
Governance Scholarship Fund with the
‘Kick Off ‘event’
21 May 2007

On May 21, 2007 Frits Barend
initiated the Scholarship Fund
of the Maastricht Graduate
School of Governance (
Maastricht University). The
Scholarship Fund‘s aim is to
create study possibilities for
talented students from
developing countries. Frits
Barend, a journalist and
well-known moderator for the
Dutch tv-programme ‘Barend en
van Dorp’, presented at this
occasion his new book on the
world-famous Dutch talent ‘Johan
Cruijf’.
Together
with a select company of local
entrepreneurs, Frits Barend,
Maastricht’s mayor Gerd Leerd
and academic director Chris de
Neubourg discussed the
importance of investing in and
recruiting for of young talent
world-wide and the role the
private sector can play in this.
Every year, dozens of talented
students without the necessary
financial means for an academic
education. The MGSoG Scholarship
Fund makes sure that these
deprived students can still opt
to accomplish their academic
aspiration.
The
‘adoption’ of a student or the
sponsoring of innovative
training and education venue in
the new MGSoG building, are just
a few of the numerous sponsor
possibilities. The ‘Kick Off’
event is only the first of a
wide variety of activities which
will be organised by the
Maastricht Graduate School of
Governance. In October this
year, the new MGSOG head
quarters will be opened
festively with all the School’s
national and international
partners. Furthermore, 2007 will
have a grand finale as the
School will organize a black tie
charity ball with a silent
auction, for which several
renowned restaurants, galleries
and hotels from the European
region have contributed
generously.About the Maastricht
