MGSoG Movie Series

In collaboration with the Lumière art house movie theatre, the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance organizes 7 movienights. The scheduled movies and documentaries are all centered around the key-areas of the School of Governance: sustainable development, globalization, trade,  social policy, social protection, migration and health. The idea is that the content of the courses will become more vivid for the School's students and that people who do not know the School yet, will get a more tangible feeling of what the School stands for and what its' programmes entail.

Prior to every screening, there is a speaker to introduce the movie/documentary and make a link to the School. Afterwards there is a drink to meet students and staff  of the School. On Monday September 4th the Movie Series kick off with The Girl In The Café. For only 5 euros you'll be able to attend this informative and enjoyable evening and have a drink or two with the other visitors.

Place: Lumière Theatre
Time: 19.30
Registration is required  in order to obtain a discount ticket and a drink voucher. Please send an email a.s.a.p to: movienight@governance.unimaas.nl

Please note that MGSoG students and PhD fellows can participate free of charge!

8 December: The Devil Came on Horseback
Speaker: Livaha Phyllis
Deadline for registration: 8-12, 11.30!

The tragedy taking place in Darfur as seen through the eyes of an American witness and who has since returned to the US to take action to stop it. Uses the photographs and first hand testimony of former U.S. Marine Captain Brian Steidle to take the viewer on a journey into the heart of Darfur, Sudan, where an Arab run government is systematically executing a plan to rid the province of its black African citizens. As an official military observer, Steidle had access to parts of the country that no journalist could penetrate. Ultimately frustrated by the inaction of the international community, Steidle resigned and returned to the US to expose the images and stories of lives systematically destroyed. We witness Steidle's transformation from soldier to observer to witness and, finally, to passionate activist and moral hero.

19 January: The Yes-Men
Speaker: Eliza Malathouni
Deadline for registration: 19-01, 11.30!

The story follows Andy and Mike from their beginnings with GWBush.com, and on to their tasteless parody of the WTO's website. Some visitors don’t notice the site is a fake, and send speaking invitations meant for the real WTO. Mike and Andy play along with the ruse and soon find themselves attending important functions as WTO representatives. Delighted to speak for the organization they oppose, Andy and Mike don thrift-store suits and set out to shock their unwitting audiences with darkly comic satires on global free trade. Weirdly, the experts don’t notice the joke and seem to agree with every terrible idea the two can come up with. Exhausted by their failed attempts to shock, Mike and Andy take a whole new approach for one final lecture.

16 February: The Price Of Sugar
Speaker: Patricia Huitron Garcia
Deadline for registration: 16-02, 11.30!

In the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic, tourists flock to pristine beaches, with little knowledge that a few miles away thousands of dispossessed Haitians are under armed guard on plantations harvesting sugarcane, most of which ends up in US kitchens. Cutting cane by machete, they work 14 hour days, 7 days a week, frequently without access to decent housing, electricity, clean water, education, healthcare or adequate nutrition. The Price of Sugar follows a charismatic Spanish priest, Father Christopher Hartley, as he organizes some of this hemisphere's poorest people, challenging the powerful interests profiting from their work. This film raises key questions about where the products we consume originate, at what human cost they are produced and ultimately, where our responsibility lies.
