Geranda Notten
g.notten@governance.unimaas.nl

Geranda Notten holds a Master in International Economic Studies from the University of Maastricht (The Netherlands). In August 2007, she has submitted her dissertation Measuring and Managing Poverty Risks to the independent Assessment Committee. She expects to obtain her doctoral degree this spring. She is currently working as a researcher for the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance in a project on multidimensional poverty for UNICEF in Congo Brazzaville.

Geranda’s research interests are in the field of poverty, inequality, consumption smoothing and social protection systems. Within these themes, she has worked as a research and consultant in national and cross-national comparative contexts, involving developed, transition and developing economies. Together with Franziska Gassmann she has performed an evaluation of Russian child benefits in terms of targeting efficiency and poverty reduction. In another project, she analyzed the relation between poverty risk and consumption smoothing abilities in Russia (joint work with Denis de Crombgugghe). She also developed a conceptual framework to explore context specific smoothing arrangements. Together with Chris de Neubourg she has been working on a series of papers involving a cross national poverty comparison of the EU member states and the US using the EU and US official poverty measurement.

Geranda has been a visiting fellow at CEPS/INSTEAD in Luxembourg, the Wiener Center for Social Policy at Harvard University as well as National Poverty Center of the University of Michigan. She participated in consultancy teams working on poverty and social protection assignments financed by the World Bank, UNICEF and GTZ. Since 2001, she has been a tutor in the problem based learning system of Maastricht University teaching bachelor level courses such as micro, macro and international economics as well as a master level course on social protection. She has also been supervising Master and Bachelor theses.
