Educational background
Jessica Hagen-Zanker graduated with a master in International Economics at Maastricht University in August 2004, completing the track Global Development and Technology. Her thesis is on population growth and economic development. Jessica also did an internship at the International Labour Office in Geneva, in the social protection sector. Since August 2004 she has been working as researcher and as the SPF and SPP program co-ordinator. Since September 2005 Jessica is member of the first cohort of the ESPP program.
Research Interest:
Jessica's research interest lies
in migration. Together with Mirtha
Muniz Castillo she wrote a paper on
remittances in El Salvador. For her
PhD dissertation she will develop
this topic further by looking at
migration as a social protection
strategy. Jessica’s PhD research
focuses on the causes and effects of
migration on a household level. She
has written some theoretical
literature reviews, but the main
focus of her work is of an empirical
nature, concentrating on Albania.
Papers on international migration
investigated at the causes of
migration and the determinants of
remittances and papers on internal
migration analyzed the causes and
impact of internal migration on a
household level, as well as family
solidarity (see publications below).
Jessica used data from the World
Bank Living Standards Measurement
Survey, as well as data she
collected in April 2008 during
fieldwork in peri-urban areas of
Tirana.
