Position: ESPP Fellow, Programme manager SPF/SPD
Email address: jessica.hagenzanker@governance.unimaas.nl

Educational background
Jessica Hagen-Zanker graduated with a master in International Economics at Maastricht University in August 2004, completing the track Global Development and Technology. Her thesis is on population growth and economic development. Jessica also did an internship at the International Labour Office in Geneva, in the social protection sector. Since August 2004 she has been working as researcher and as the SPF and SPP program co-ordinator. Since September 2005 Jessica is member of the first cohort of the ESPP program.

Research Interest:
Jessica's research interest lies in migration. Together with Mirtha Muniz Castillo she wrote a paper on remittances in El Salvador. For her PhD dissertation she will develop this topic further by looking at migration as a social protection strategy. A risky environment, market failures and an under-developed social protection system often lead to migration of one ore more family members, who then send remittances home. Whether migration makes sense as a migration strategy will be analysed by looking at the causes, costs and effects of migration and the effect of remittances on household income. The research question will be completed by writing a number of papers using the Living Standards Measurement Survey panel data for Albania.

The first paper, co-authored with Melissa Siegel, compares the motives of Albanian and Moldovan migrants when sending remittances. We find clear evidence for self-insurance in Albania. We also find significant results for the bequest motive and altruism. The empirical paper, as well as an extensive review of the literature on the determinants of remittances, can be downloaded below. Comments are very welcome.
