Keetie Roelen obtained
her Masters degree in International
Economic Studies at Maastricht
University in 2003. The topic of her
thesis was the Relationship between
Economic Growth and Poverty in
Sub-Saharan Africa. After her
studies, Keetie was an intern at the
poverty unit of the United Nations
Development Programme in Namibia.
Her focus during that internship was
on a pilot project for a
Participatory Poverty Assessment in
the northern region Ohangwena, the
national progress report on the
Millennium Development Goals Namibia
and the set-up of the Poverty
Monitoring Strategy. Upon return to
Europe, Keetie worked on a
short-term consultancy assignment
with Gassmann Consulting towards the
development of the report
"Development
of methodology for monitoring of
poverty and social exclusion in
Latvia".
In August 2004, Keetie started
working for the Department of
Economics and Maastricht Graduate
School of Governance at University
Maastricht as a lecturer and
researcher. In her capacity as
lecturer, she taught a first-year
bachelor's course MacroEconomics, a
third-year bachelor's course
Economic Sociology and a Master's
course Managing Social Risks: the
economics of the welfare state. As a
researcher, Keetie has been working
on a World Bank research project
comparing social security systems in
9 countries in Europe, thereby
looking at social assistance in
specific. The end result is a
briefing book, which was presented
during the World Bank course "Social
Safety Nets in OECD Countries:
Lessons for Developing Countries" in
April 2005 in Washinton DC.
Furthermore, she extended her
research efforts towards social
protection and social assistance
measures in developing countries and
capacity building in developing
countries by means of higher
education. In the latter field,
Keetie presented the paper "Capacity
Development supported by ICT in
higher Education" at the IST Africa
conference in Pretoria, South Africa,
3-5 May 2006.
In August 2005, Keetie started
working as the coordinator for the
Master of Science programme in
Public Policy and Human Development
of the Maastricht Graduate School of
Governance. The Master programme
started in September 2005 and its
third batch of students will
commence the programme in September
2006. As a coordinator, Keetie is
responsible for the overall
organization and quality of the
programme and functions as main
focal point for teachers, students
and other stakeholders involved.
Keetie also started her position
as project consultant for the
Maastricht Graduate School of
Governance in August 2005. She has
worked on several projects in
various fields of expertise and for
different organizations. These
include training and study tour
projects in the field of public
policy, social (protection) policy
and poverty. As a project
