Research Interest
My research focuses on labour market policies and their perverse incentive effects on labour supply.
It is guided by the question: How do the different European labour market policies compare in terms of incentives to supply labour?
The most important idea behind the European unemployment insurance is basically poverty relief. This, however, is only one side of the coin. The main disadvantage of many European systems is that especially low-skilled workers in some cases see no real gain in looking for a job. This poverty trap brings about other negative effects. It is known, for instance, that absence from the labour markets reduce a worker’s human capital and hence, his market value. This in turn leads to a vicious circle that creates a huge burden to society, and hence, constitutes a big problem for policymakers. The main aim of my research is to compare past efforts and experiences of different European countries and to determine the “best methods” in terms of long-term unemployment reduction, employment creation and poverty relief.
