Research Interest
My main
research interests include migration and remittances. International flows of worker remittances have grown rapidly in recent decades. They were estimated to reach $167 billion in 005, surpassing Official Development Aid (ODA). Since these flows are largely associated with poverty alleviation and development possibilities, it is essential that we better understand the specific characteristics of remittances in order to formulate better policy initiatives to allow the unrestricted flow of remittances in a safe and efficient manner. My research is mainly concerned with a comparative approach to understanding the determinants of remittances and the determinants of channel choice focusing on both macro and micro level determinants with particular emphasis on specific country characteristics. Within this main research there are three particular themes: overall determinants of remittances and channel choice, how culture or ethnicity play a role and the regulation of remittances. I am particularly interested in the cases of Netherlands to Suriname, Turkey, Morocco, and Netherlands Antilles and Moldova. I am currently involved in a World Bank Remittances Corridor Project with Utrecht School of Economics and the Dutch Ministry of Finance which looks as remittances between the Netherlands and Suriname.
