Research Interest
My main research interest centres on
the effects of immigration policies
on the choice of a destination
country for highly skilled migrants.
The trend of increasingly skilled
migration is usually explained by
the combination of changes on the
supply and demand side. The focus of
my research is however, on the
demand-driven human capital flows.
As potential migrants look for the
best country to live in, they will
be interested in numerous
socioeconomic and political factors
in the destination countries that
can work either as incentives or
disincentives for choosing a
particular country. While selective
migration policies are often
mentioned as a reason for
increasingly skilled migration,
there has not been much empirical
research in this field. This
research thus builds on developing
the link between immigration
policies and determinants for
migration. Different policy regimes
will be evaluated regarding their
impact on observed immigration flows
to a specific country. For the case
studies, we observe three European
countries, which have recently
joined the competition for knowledge
migrants with different policy
arrangements. The host countries in
the case studies are the United
Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany.
