Research Interest
The research project focuses on
changes of social policy in
Central and Eastern Europe. The
project consists of two parts.
The first one presents a wide
overview of change in three
social policy areas: childcare,
pensions and unemployment
compensation. It covers the
period since the beginning of
transition and compares the
group of countries which joined
the EU in 2004. Thanks to the
application of an innovative
comparative method, fuzzy set
ideal type analysis, the
research reveals significant
diversity of social policy
models both within the countries
and among them. This complex
diversity suggests that there
have been multiple logics of
social policy developments in
the region
The second part is of
explanatory character and
involves two comparative case
studies of social policy change
in Hungary and Poland. The
explanatory framework relies
heavily on the new
institutionalism approach and
emphasizes the role of
institutional factors in shaping
post-communist welfare states.
The institutional perspective
with its focus on historical
dimension and issues of
institutional stability/change,
allows for more precise
explanation of multiple logics
of development, prioritization
and hybridization of social
policy in the region
