Educational Background
August 2005 MSc International Economic Studies, University of Maastricht, The Netherlands

Master thesis topic: Eradicating poverty in India with the Millennium Development Goals: Primary education for all or only for some Gujaratis?

Research Interest
I am interested and qualified in topics that are in the analytical focus of the ESPP programme. This refers especially to the study of educational policies and their effects on welfare. During my studies, I followed the track “Human Resources, Labour Markets and Society”. During an AIESEC internship in India I applied this focus in a field research. I did a field survey on educational needs of children in several slums of the city of Ahmedabad. It made me understand better the factors that influence the demand and supply of good quality primary education. In my master thesis I did further research on that topic. As coordinator of a UNICEF Learning Programme on Public Policy, Advocacy and Partnerships for Children's Rights I got further insights into interesting education policy issues of the grassroots levels of various countries. I am convinced that education policies need to be analyzed thoroughly and then adapted properly to the needs of the poorer performing members of our societies. I want to further the academic insights into policies that are assuring good education quality, into how the benefits of education are distributed within and among societies as well as into how this effects the economic development of different social groups. In my dissertation I want to advance research on the impact of early childcare and education institutions on the later educational opportunities of children from different social backgrounds. The main research question is: What is the impact of different early childhood education and care arrangements on the strength of family background effects and consequently on the distribution of later educational attainments? This research facilitates the identification of best policy strategies for the provision of equal educational opportunities through ECEC. The main dependent variable is the distribution of educational attainments.
