Theme 5 Child-, Human Capital- and Employment- Policy

Various aspects of child and family policy are studied under this theme. The studies specifically focus on the area of education and childcare, and poverty and well-being of children. With respect to childcare and education, the analyses focus currently on the role of education and other child-related investments after nationwide shocks, institutional features of public and private child-care arrangements, and the impact of early child care and education as determinant for educational opportunities later in life. Research in the fields of poverty and well-being of children and families include research to child poverty indicators and the relevance of child and family policies for poverty reduction, as well as a study to family well-being in relation to the intra-household allocation of resources and power. The studies apply a wide variety of research methods, both theoretical and empirical, using qualitative and quantitative data from administrative sources and surveys.
Senior and junior staff specialising in the field of Labour Market and Human Capital work closely with the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA) of Maastricht University, whose senior staff members are also actively involved in the teaching programme and research work of the research fellows. Subjects currently researched are the impact of institutions on the transition from education to work in post-socialist countries, the reassessment of the link between labour market deregulation and unemployment, with a focus on the reliability of the existing labour market indicators, and the effect of employment subsidies on wages and employability of beneficiaries. Research methods employed range from quantitative micro-simulation, panel data analysis, to country case studies with the aim to test and reassess theory, and qualitative active labour market programme assessments by interviewing individual participants of such programmes.
