Maarten Brouwer

Maarten Brouwer (50) is an economist by profession. He studied development economics at the Free University in Amsterdam.  He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands in 1988. Since then he has been working in Tanzania and Sudan, both in the field of development assistance. From 1990-1991 he  was actively involved in developing policies with regard to the transition in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet-Union towards a market based economic system. He has been working in the Asia department from 1994-1997. Since 2000 Mr. Brouwer has been head of the department for macro-economic cooperation and later (in 2005) he became Effectiveness & Quality Director, the position he still holds today. He has also been the Netherlands delegate in the OECD/DAC Working Party on Aid Effectiveness and participated in Netherlands delegation at the third high Level Forum in Accra. Last year he was responsible for drafting the new white paper on Dutch development assistance by minister Koenders.
